Arsenal face a daunting task in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final after a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
Newcastle’s red-hot striker, Alexander Isak, broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with his 10th goal in nine games, while Anthony Gordon extended the visitors’ lead early in the second half with a composed finish in the 51st minute.
The Gunners struggled to find a response, squandering several opportunities and leaving themselves a steep challenge in next month’s return leg.
However, amidst a lackluster team performance, one player shone brightly, providing Arsenal fans with a glimpse of a potential superstar in the making.
Myles Lewis-Skelly shines despite Arsenal loss to Newcastle
The player in question is Myles Lewis-Skelly, who played well against Newcastle and showcased his talent and composure.
There were several instances when the 18-year-old came under serious pressure, the kind that would’ve seen Newcastle get a shot in had he lost the ball.
However, Lewis-Skelly was able to get out of those hairy situations, turning one into an Arsenal free kick and another into an incisive attack.
And though there was one instance where he gave the ball away to Isak in a dangerous position, it was a rare error in a display the kind of which you’d see from a star in his prime.
Lewis-Skelly’s ball control is outstanding and he’s incredibly brave on the ball, making him a huge asset for Arsenal at such a young age.
And as he continues to develop as a player, it’ll be exciting to see just how much better he can become.
How the media rated Lewis-Skelly v Newcastle
The Evening Standard gave Lewis-Skelly a rating of 7 out of 10 for his efforts on the night.
“Showed his courage on the ball by taking it in some tight spaces and beating his opposite man,” they wrote. “A rare positive on a disappointing night.”
The Express also went with a 7 out of 10 rating as they wrote: “Looks a real prospect.
“A threat going forward and accomplished with the ball at his feet. Not imtimidated either and notably won one physical tussle with Sandro Tonali.”
Meanwhile, football.london gave him a 6 out of 10 and wrote: ‘Got into some very hairy situations but showcased his own skill to get out of them and progress play or win free-kicks.
‘There is a real player there and he continues to grow with every game – needs to be careful at times though as he did give away the ball to Isak in one dangerous scenario.’
