The 31-year-old Argentine international is anticipated to miss three weeks of action after being ruled out of Sunday’s match against Real Madrid.

Messi broke a bone in his right arm and only played 23 minutes of the 4-2 victory over Sevilla.

The Catalan giants suffered a severe setback when the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was pulled after recording a goal and an assist.

“Tests conducted on the first team player Leo Messi have confirmed that he has a fracture of the radial bone in his right arm,” the club said in a statement.

“He will be out for approximately three weeks.”

With 12 goals in as many games this season, including five goals in just two Champions League appearances, Messi has been in incredible form for Barcelona.

As he attempts to establish himself as a first-team regular, French winger Ousmane Dembele is expected to replace him in the starting lineup.

The El Clasico on Sunday will mark the first time the two Spanish teams have faced each other without Messi or Ronaldo.

Right now, Barcelona leads La Liga by four points above Real Madrid, who are sagging in seventh place.
