Ruben Amorim faces significant challenges with Manchester United following yet another defeat at Old Trafford, this time to Brighton in the Premier League.
Despite the disappointing results, Amorim remains committed to his tactical approach. On Sunday, United suffered a 3-1 loss to Brighton, marking their sixth home defeat in the Premier League this season and a total of ten losses from 22 matches. Since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, the team has garnered only 11 points from 11 games and currently sits 13th in the league, closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
United managed just one shot on target against Brighton, a penalty converted by Bruno Fernandes after Joshua Zirkzee was fouled. Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, and Georginio Rutter scored, with Rutter benefiting from a mistake by Andre Onana.
Under Amorim, United has kept only one clean sheet in 15 matches across all competitions, and his adoption of a 3-4-3 formation has yet to produce the desired results. Nevertheless, the Portuguese coach is resolute in his belief that his methods, which brought him success at Sporting Lisbon, will eventually pay off.
“It’s clear,” he stated when asked about establishing his authority at United. “I’m not going to change how I see the game. The players and fans may have to endure some challenges, but I believe this approach will yield results. We must endure these moments.”
While United recently showed signs of improvement, drawing 2-2 with Liverpool and defeating Arsenal on penalties in the FA Cup, their lackluster performance against Southampton and the defeat by Brighton indicate that much work remains.
“Another home loss is unacceptable, especially the way we conceded goals,” Amorim commented. “We can play well in brief moments, but our inconsistency leads to nervousness, resulting in conceding goals. Brighton capitalized on this, and once we fell behind, it became difficult to regroup. We must change this quickly.”
