Goalkeeper Jack Butland comically scored an own goal, giving Manchester United an unexpected lead against Rangers in the Europa League.
Butland seemed to have an easy task with Christian Eriksen’s corner early in the second half, but the ball grazed the back of his glove and slipped behind him into the net.
After a deft United move, Bruno Fernandes’ shot from inside the box was deflected, leading to Eriksen’s straightforward delivery from the ensuing corner.
Attempting to clear the ball, Butland misjudged his timing under pressure, causing it to skid off his gloves and into the net. He looked visibly dejected as he slowly picked himself up after the blunder.
Earlier, a goal by Matthijs de Ligt was disallowed due to a foul by Leny Yoro, adding to the frustration for United, who had already seen another goal controversially ruled out from a set piece.
Rangers veteran Ally McCoist was stunned by the gaffe. During the live broadcast on TNT Sports, he remarked, “Where do I start with that? It’s simply a howler. There’s no justification for that. Jack Butland has to do better.”
