Ruben Amorim is aiming to sign a striker this summer as he embarks on a rebuild of his Manchester United squad.
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged his former club to revamp the team’s core by adding five new players to Amorim’s lineup this summer.
As the Red Devils prepare to return to Premier League action this weekend, their chances of securing Champions League football are dim; they currently sit 14 points behind Chelsea in fourth place. While fifth place could still offer a Champions League spot for next season, United are 12 points behind rivals Manchester City, who hold that position.
Next up for United is Tottenham Hotspur, as they travel to North London seeking to get back to winning ways in the league. Despite the challenges, Ruben Amorim still has the opportunity to salvage the season, with United remaining in contention for the FA Cup and Europa League. Plans for a summer overhaul are already in motion, with Amorim keen to strengthen several positions, particularly at striker.
Scholes emphasized the need for a new “spine” for the team: “There are several concerns. Ruben Amorim has a lot to address, especially during transfer windows, but I don’t see a solid core of players,” Scholes stated during The Overlap Fan Debate.
He pointed out, “When you look at successful teams, like Liverpool, they have a strong goalkeeper, solid center-backs, and quality forwards and midfielders. I don’t think United has that in any position. A new goalkeeper is necessary, possibly two center-backs, two central midfielders, and ideally one center forward with stature and quality to help form a strong core. Once you establish that spine, you can build around it.”
Scholes added, “That core is vital. If they fail to get it right this summer, it might sound extreme, but based on the current form under this manager, relegation could become a concern. It’s been that bad.”
It seems Scholes may see at least one of his transfer wishes fulfilled, as reports from Spain indicate that United has reached a significant agreement with Sporting CP to sign Viktor Gyökeres at the season’s end. According to Fichajes, a deal has been established for Gyökeres to reunite with Amorim, with whom he previously worked at Sporting.
