Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, Manchester United has experienced a revolving door of managers, many of whom have been undermined by unchecked player power, a situation exacerbated by the Glazers’ mismanagement.
Each prominent coach has attempted to halt the decline into mediocrity, but the profit-driven American ownership has prioritized revenue generation over on-field success.
As a result, opportunistic players have used the club as a final payday, while underperformers continue to be rewarded with lucrative contracts.
When managers have attempted to assert control, players have often united in resistance, leading to the dismissal of coaches as they downed tools.
Amorim Set for Change
However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, INEOS is poised to change this culture with Ruben Amorim now in charge.
The Portuguese manager has made it clear that it’s his way or the highway, a lesson Marcus Rashford recently learned.
Many players will likely face similar realizations in the coming months, as Jacobs reports that INEOS has given Amorim a five-window timeframe to revamp the club and eliminate those not up to standard.
“This won’t be a situation where players can simply ride out a Manchester United manager, as we’ve seen before,” Jacobs noted.
Amorim has been informed of an initial five-window plan, during which he is expected to make significant improvements.
Adapt or Perish
“The players will need to adapt and buy into Amorim’s style and philosophy. If they don’t, they’ll quickly find out—like Rashford did—that the manager will consistently select those who are willing to embrace his system.”
So far, Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia have left the club in Amorim’s first window, with more exits likely in the summer.
It’s now a matter of perform or perish, and based on the team’s poor league performance, significant changes are expected by the time the new season begins.
