Ruben Amorim faces calls from Manchester United fans to start rising star Chido Obi in upcoming matches.
The 17-year-old’s impressive performance during United’s thrilling 2-2 draw against Everton on Saturday has garnered widespread support from fans.
When United trailed 2-0 in the 70th minute, Obi came on for Rasmus Hojlund. Former player Rio Ferdinand expressed his embarrassment over the team’s first-half performance, which saw goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure.
However, the introductions of Alejandro Garnacho and Obi revitalized the squad, injecting much-needed energy and pace.
Just two minutes after Obi entered the game, Bruno Fernandes equalized with a free-kick, but Manuel Ugarte quickly responded with a volley to restore Everton’s lead.
Despite a shaky start, United looked far more threatening in the closing minutes, and many fans credited Obi with “changing the game.”
One fan remarked, “I’m not joking; Chido Obi linked up play better than Hojlund.” Another added, “Obi contributed more than Hojlund has all season.” A third fan quipped, “Obi actually changed the outcome for us; he deserves to start over Hojlund.”
“Hojlund needs to sit on the bench,” another supporter stated, emphasizing the need to give Obi a chance.
Fans have been vocal about Obi’s potential following his performance against Everton, with one suggesting he should start against Ipswich on Wednesday. Another fan commented, “A 17-year-old academy kid is outperforming the £72m Hojlund.”
Hojlund struggled throughout the match, making only seven passes, with just 12 touches and no attempts at goal. He was substituted after losing eight duels.
In contrast, Obi, who played just four minutes against Spurs the previous week, showcased maturity beyond his years in his second Premier League appearance, matching Hojlund’s touches despite playing 70 fewer minutes.
The match’s most memorable moment came when a potential penalty for Everton was overturned late in the game. Referee Andy Madley initially pointed to the spot after Ashley Young was brought down by Harry Maguire, but VAR intervened, leading to a lengthy review.
Currently, Amorim’s team sits one point behind Everton, ranked 15th in the Premier League standings. What are your thoughts on Chido Obi’s performances so far?
