Reports indicate that Manchester United dispatched scouts to evaluate Geovany Quenda of Sporting Lisbon, eyeing a potential summer transfer for the talented wonderkid.
The highly rated 17-year-old has been associated with the Red Devils since Ruben Amorim’s departure from Sporting to join the club.
Since taking charge, Amorim has been eager to make his impact, and Quenda’s name has been circulating within the club for quite a while.
While there hasn’t been any official confirmation, previous reports suggested that Manchester United and the Portuguese club had agreed on a £50 million deal for Quenda.
According to Record, United’s scouts were present in the stands to observe Quenda during Sporting’s match against Porto on Friday.
The report further states that the Red Devils will continue to assess Quenda when they face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Quenda joined Sporting in 2019 at just 13 years old, having previously been part of Benfica’s youth program.
Amorim recognized Quenda’s talent immediately, and at the age of 16, he made history as the youngest player to compete for Sporting’s reserve team.
After making an impression in a pre-season friendly, Quenda was added to Sporting’s first team at the beginning of the current campaign, and Amorim was gushing about his performance at right wing-back.
In July, Amorim told Sporting TV, “He’s very talented, very mature, and understands the game like an adult.”
“I think he had a great game and we have a player there, but he has a lot to improve on.”
Quenda, born in Guinea-Bissau, has represented Portugal at both the U17 and U21 levels.
In August, he received his first senior call-up from Portugal manager Roberto Martinez for the Nations League matches against Croatia and Scotland, although he did not see any action in either game.
Following a challenging start to Amorim’s tenure, United currently sits in 13th place in the standings.
