When Alejandro Garnacho was substituted during the first half of Manchester United’s victory over Ipswich, the supporters jeered head coach Ruben Amorim.
Following the red card issued to new signing Patrick Dorgu, United played over half the match with ten men but still managed to secure a crucial win against the Tractor Boys. Matthijs De Ligt and Harry Maguire added goals to an own goal by Sam Morsy, with captain Bruno Fernandes providing assists for two of the goals.
Despite a lackluster performance and missed opportunities to close the gap on Wolves, Ipswich remains five points from safety, even with two goals from Jaden Philogene.
Amorim opted to maintain five defenders on the field after Dorgu’s dismissal, leading to Garnacho being substituted. The team had to battle hard for their victory with a man down.
Shortly before halftime, Garnacho exited the pitch and headed straight down the tunnel, later posting a cryptic message on Instagram. In response to comments regarding Garnacho’s reaction, Amorim acknowledged the situation, saying, “I know, I know,” and indicated he would discuss it with Garnacho soon.
When asked about the decision to bench Garnacho, who had seemed to be United’s main offensive threat, Amorim explained, “The thinking was we were playing more in the 5-3-1, and I know that is a risk. I believed the team was controlling the game well, but a substitution was necessary.”
Earlier in the season, Garnacho had a confrontation with Amorim during a Europa League match against Viktoria Plzen, where he allegedly turned his back on the coach while receiving instructions, leading to disciplinary action. Garnacho’s representatives claimed it was a misunderstanding, but it has cast a shadow over his relationship with the coach.
With the FA Cup match against Fulham approaching, Garnacho’s actions are under renewed scrutiny. Meanwhile, supporters expressed their frustrations on social media, questioning Amorim’s decision-making. One commenter on X stated, “I’m starting to think Amorim is inexperienced,” while another remarked, “I don’t know if I would have taken off Garnacho.”
