Paul Scholes claimed that Alejandro Garnacho was “sulking” following his substitution in Manchester United’s draw with Real Sociedad.
Spain’s Euro 2024 star Mikel Oyarzabal earned a penalty after Bruno Fernandes handballed, canceling out Joshua Zirkzee’s opening goal, and United’s bad play continued on Thursday night as they drew 1-1 with the La Liga team in the Europa League.
Oyarzabal earned his team a draw, which they will carry into next Thursday’s second leg at Old Trafford.
As the game progressed, United left five squad positions empty because of injuries and players quitting the team, and Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim attributed the drop in performance to exhaustion.
Only 21-year-old Toby Collyer was added from the list of young players, while Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof were also added in the second half. He was mainly unable to make any changes, and a youthful bench was virtually unused.
According to Scholes, who was pouting on the bench, Garnacho, Leny Yoro, and Zirkzee were the players pulled.
Scholes remarked on TNT Sports, “I thought he was pouting a little bit.” “I don’t feel tired.” They seem fine to me. This Manchester United squad, in my opinion, lacks strong legs.
Running through is Garnacho’s greatest strength. Although he occasionally made poor choices, he was generally lethargic and a little sulky. Since they don’t really have anything else to rely on, he will need to recover.
“Coming to these places, European away games are difficult,” Scholes continued. The atmosphere wasn’t particularly hostile. United performed admirably, but it didn’t seem like they would win by a significant margin. It’s a little unclear where the objectives will originate.
In the meantime, Karen Carney resisted the forward’s corner.
“Garnacho had something taped around his knee, and it didn’t appear that he had the burst,” she said. He didn’t appear to be himself. Perhaps he didn’t play well.
Perhaps he hadn’t won the game as they believed. I do believe that exhaustion played a role. He has no one to bring on, so they bring on subs.
When Garnacho first joined the team, he had a falling out with Amorim. He also caused a stir when, after being substituted last week, he went straight down the tunnel against Ipswich.
Later, in an attempt to make up for his petty behavior, the Portuguese stated Garnacho, 20, would cover the cost of the team’s dinner.
This week, Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte were knocked down, contributing to the club’s mounting injury list.
“We had control up until the penalty, and it changed momentum,” Amorim said to TNT Sports following the match. We’ve been quite exhausted over the past 30 minutes, and things will be different at Old Trafford because we’ll be under pressure. Our physical survival for Sunday’s match versus Arsenal will be our focus.
“The momentum shifted, but it was obviously exhaustion.” They were stronger in the final half hour, and we were late on the balls.
We had good possession up until the penalty. Even if we occasionally make poor choices, we occasionally have positive moments.
“Dalot has the advantage and Rasmus did the sprint, but that can happen, they cannot focus on that and have to move on to the next play,” he added in response to Rasmus Hojlund losing his temper with Diogo Dalot.
