On Saturday night, Nikola Jokic showed up in character for a playoff first-round game.
The main character from the “Despicable Me” films, “Gru,” was that person.
.
Jokic, the Denver Nuggets’ two-time NBA MVP, donned a similar ensemble and his trademark wraparound striped scarf to “Gru.” When the Nuggets posted, “Are you going to steal the moon or play basketball?” it went viral on social media.
LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers were the first opponents Jokic and the Nuggets faced in their title defense.
His participation in a promotional video for “Despicable Me 4,” in which he seeks therapy after the Minions mistake him for their boss, seemed to be hinted at by the outfit.
Jokic converses with a therapist while sitting on a couch in a suit in the trailer. Everyone thinks he looks like “Gru,” he explains.
“I felt like I looked great that day. Jokic tells the therapist, “I put on this gorgeous suit that gave the impression that I mean business.”
“So what happened?” She ponders.
“They claim that I resemble ‘Gru,'” Jokic answers.
She asks, “Why is that bothering you?”
Jokic is adamant that it doesn’t.
So why mention it? She asks.
Jokic responds, “Because they won’t leave me alone.”
Jokic then approaches a window and raises a shade to show a few Minions outside applauding “Gru.”
“Guys, I’m not your boss,” Jokic says.
Last season, the Nuggets won the NBA championship after sweeping the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.
The NBA’s top scorer isn’t too concerned about winning four more games versus LeBron James and the Lakers a year later, based on Jokić’s next outfit.
With an average of 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, and nine assists this season, Jokic is undoubtedly the Nuggets’ best player on the court. BetMGM Sportsbook has him as the favorite to earn a third MVP award. Last season, when the Nuggets won their first NBA championship in team history, he was named MVP of the finals.
