After his nimble run down the right flank and cross brought up Casemiro’s first goal in Manchester United’s thrilling 3-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League semi-finals, Harry Maguire shrugged off his new moniker, “Harrydinho.”
After being used as an emergency striker, Maguire saved United in the quarterfinals. He twisted and turned past an Athletic defender to get to the byline, then produced a cross into the box that Casemiro headed in.
His teammates were shocked to see the center-back that high up the field. Manager Ruben Amorim and captain Bruno Fernandes both said they were surprised to find Maguire’s locker containing such dribbling talents.
The outcome puts United in a strong position to meet Tottenham in the Europa League final, although Maguire downplayed his role after finding out that United supporters had compared him to a Brazilian winger with quick feet.
When TNT Sports revealed his moniker, “Harrydinho,” Maguire grinned and said, “It’s fantastic, I’m sure there are a few nicknames for me out there.” “The first half was clinical, and the second half was professional.” It’s a fantastic win, and next week is another important match.
“I started assaulting the rear post. I believe [Alejandro] Garna[cho] passed the ball to me; it was enjoyable to dribble a little and make a fantastic cross. They must have trusted me to insert the crucifix because there were many bodies in the box.
“In the end, it was a fantastic header and it felt good. Getting the victory is more essential. The tie is not finished. For the second leg, we’ll be prepared and concentrated, and I have no doubt that Old Trafford will be like this.
Fernandes and Amorim both commended Maguire for recovering from setbacks in his United career, as the heavily criticized center-back had one of his greatest runs in the team’s middle of defense.
However, Amorim said, “He’s a good winger!” after his surprising sprint down the right side. There are times in our lives when things are tough, and Harry has experienced these times. We must have fun since whatever he does benefits the team.
Furthermore, Fernandes said: “What a winger! He probably didn’t even realize that was in his locker. Harry is now a lot more self-assured man. His position is growing stronger while he is playing, and we hope he continues to get better as a leader.”
